Announcing the
Global Nuclear Disarmament Campaign
of the Unity-and-Diversity General Assembly

The UDC General Assembly has embarked upon a Global Nuclear Disarmament Campaign with the June, July and August Assemblies being devoted to the campaign followed by an L.A. conference in early September, now definite for the afternoon of Saturday, September 6.  If your organization would like to attend the conference, please contact Roger Eaton, rogereaton@earthlink.net or 310 390 5220.

Please Join us at the July 19th Assembly in downtown Los Angeles, where we will be showing Beyond War's video "Building a World Beyond War: A Roadmap for Citizens" followed by a presentation and Q&A with Dr Robert Dodge of Beyond War.  In June, the General Assembly had a great presentation from the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, and will continue the series in August. Download Flyer for July 19 event. Please disseminate widely.  See also Dr Dodge's article in the Sunday Ventura County Star for June 29.

Time: Saturday, July 19, 9am to 11:30am.  Cookies and socializing after.
Place: Downtown LA, 1020 S. Flower St., LA 90015, corner of Olympic Blvd.  We have a beautiful, modern meeting room, and we welcome your presence.  $10 suggested donation.
Directions: Going North or South on the Harbor 110 Freeway in downtown L.A., exit at Ninth St. and go east to Flower St., then right one block to Olympic.  Park in the lot (SE corner) and go to the rear of the building next door.  Parking is free in this lot until 11:45am.  Any problem, call Leland Stewart's cell: (310) 869-5014.

Our idea is to spark a Global Nuclear Disarmament Campaign in the context of a more general transformation of humanity to a peaceful, just and sustainable world.  The very insanity of nuclear weapons, based as it is on the virulent us-vs-them thinking that has plagued the human race, makes it evident that a reasonable approach to nuclear disarmament in the various nations, important as that is, is unlikely to work by itself.   A powerful human awakening is needed to build trust within the human family across all boundaries.

At the September conference, our theme will be the building of a Los Angeles Coalition for a Global Nuclear Disarmament Campaign.  David Krieger of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation will be the introductory speaker.  The purpose of the Coalition will be to coordinate efforts to spark similar coalitions in other major cities around the world.  These local coalitions then will league together to form a coordinated global campaign.

Beginning in the fall, the UDC General Assembly plans to facilitate similar Los Angeles coalitions to promote global campaigns in several additional areas, starting with Global Climate Change.  As these coalitions take off, our idea is to encourage the meshing of their campaigns into that human awakening that we see as necessary for success in any of these particular areas.

Almost since the beginning of UDC, the Los Angeles Assembly has been meeting, though it has usually been called the "General Assembly".  Its purpose is to provide the central body through which the various dimensions of UDC work can meet and cooperate.  Meetings have generally been monthly on Saturdays and for a half day.

Since UDC has its headquarters in Los Angeles, the challenge of having an active local assembly, a state assembly, a national assembly, and a global assembly all in the same geographic area is a daunting one.  There have been times when the local assembly and the global assembly met separately, but most of the time they are one body and handle all matters that come their way.

At this time an email campaign is beginning to build the global assembly.  Because the campaign is on email, and because most people in the global assembly will be centered elsewhere, there may not be a need for a second assembly in greater Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Assembly has the opportunity to bring together projects and affiliates who are working in many fields and work side-by-side on their separate ventures.   In this way, when some special event or crisis comes along, it is possible for everyone to help for that short time.
